The Sadness That Got Dirty: Read Japanese with English!
I rewrote a famous poem by the Japanese poet Nakahara Chuya in easy Japanese and added an English translation.
中原 中也（なかはら ちゅうや）（1907–1937）は、昭和（しょうわ）（1926–1988）初期（しょき）を代表（だいひょう）する詩人（しじん）です。
Nakahara Chuya (1907–1937) was a poet who represented the early Showa period (1926–1988).
中原中也（なかはらちゅうや）の代表的（だいひょうてき）な詩（し）「汚（よご）れつちまつた悲（かな）しみに……」を紹介（しょうかい）します。
I will introduce one of Nakahara Chuya’s most famous poems, “The Sadness That Got Dirty…”.
昔（むかし）の詩（し）の言葉（ことば）は難（むずか）しいので、私（わたし）が優（やさ）しい日本語（にほんご）で書（か）き直（なお）しました。
Old poems often use difficult words, so I rewrote it in easy Japanese.

The Sadness That Got Dirty
よごれて しまった かなしみに
To the sadness that got dirty
きょうも こゆきが ふっています。
Today, small snowflakes are falling again.
よごれて しまった かなしみに
To the sadness that got dirty
きょうも かぜが とおりすぎます。
Today, even the wind just passes by.
よごれて しまった かなしみは
The sadness that got dirty
たとえば きつねの かわの ふくの ようです。
Is like a coat made of fox fur.
よごれて しまった かなしみは
The sadness that got dirty
こゆきが つもって ちぢこまります。
It shrinks under the falling snow.
よごれて しまった かなしみは
The sadness that got dirty
なにも のぞまず なにも ねがいません。
Wants nothing and wishes for nothing.
よごれて しまった かなしみは
The sadness that got dirty
つまらない まいにちの なかで
In the middle of boring days
しぬことを ゆめみます。
It dreams of dying.
よごれて しまった かなしみに
To the sadness that got dirty
こころが いたくなり こわくなります。
The heart hurts and feels scared.
よごれて しまった かなしみに
To the sadness that got dirty
なにも できないまま ひが くれていきます。
The day ends, and we can do nothing.
