Why Japan needs its legendary night train now more than ever

あの「ブルートレイン」が帰（かえ）ってくる！なぜ今（いま）、夜行（やこう）列車（れっしゃ）の旅（たび）がふたたび注目（ちゅうもく）されるのか？

The "Blue Train" is Coming Back! Why is Overnight Train Travel Getting Attention Again Now?

むかしむかし、日本（にほん）には「ブルートレイン」と呼（よ）ばれる、青（あお）い車体（しゃたい）がうつくしい夜行（やこう）列車（れっしゃ）がありました。「走（はし）るホテル」とも呼（よ）ばれ、たくさんの人（ひと）を乗（の）せて、夜（よる）のあいだに長（なが）い距離（きょり）を走（はし）っていたのです。しかし、新幹線（しんかんせん）や飛行機（ひこうき）が便利（べんり）になるにつれて、ブルートレインはすこしずつ姿（すがた）を消（け）し、2015年（ねん）にすべての定期（ていき）運行（うんこう）を終（お）えました。

Once upon a time in Japan, there were beautiful night trains with blue bodies called "Blue Trains." They were also known as "running hotels" and carried many people over long distances throughout the night. However, as bullet trains (Shinkansen) and airplanes became more convenient, the Blue Trains gradually disappeared, with all regular services ending in 2015.

ところが、JR東日本（ひがしにほん）が2027年（ねん）の春（はる）に、新（あたら）しい夜行（やこう）特急（とっきゅう）列車（れっしゃ）を走（はし）らせると発表（はっぴょう）しました。その車体（しゃたい）は、むかしのブルートレインを思（おも）わせる青色（あおいろ）のデザイン（でざいん）です。まさに、現代版（げんだいばん）ブルートレインの復活（ふっかつ）です。

However, JR East has announced that it will launch a new overnight limited express train in the spring of 2027. The design of its body is a blue color reminiscent of the old Blue Trains. It is truly the revival of a modern-day Blue Train.

でも、どうして今（いま）、夜行（やこう）列車（れっしゃ）なのでしょうか？その背景（はいけい）には、「推（お）し活（かつ）」という新（あたら）しい文化（ぶんか）や、ホテル代（だい）がとても高（たか）くなっているという、今（いま）の日本（にほん）ならではの理由（りゆう）があるのです。

But why an overnight train now? Behind this decision are reasons unique to modern Japan, such as a new cultural phenomenon called "oshikatsu" and the soaring cost of hotel stays.
