The Strange and Heartwarming Story of Sony's AIBO

Did you know that in Japan, people hold funerals for robots?
「え、機械（きかい）のお葬式（おそうしき）？」と、びっくりするかもしれませんね。
You might be surprised and think, "A funeral for a machine?"
今日（きょう）は、ソニーが作（つく）った犬（いぬ）の形（かたち）のロボット「AIBO（アイボ）」と、そのちょっと不思議（ふしぎ）で、心（こころ）が温（あたた）かくなるお話（はなし）を紹介（しょうかい）します。
Today, I will introduce you to AIBO, a dog-shaped robot made by Sony. It's a strange but heartwarming story.
AIBO（アイボ）って何（なに）？
What is AIBO?
AIBOは、1999年（ねん）にソニーがはじめに発売（はつばい）した、犬（いぬ）の形（かたち）をしたロボットです。
AIBO is a robot shaped like a dog. Sony first started selling it in 1999.
「AIBO」という名前（なまえ）は、日本語（にほんご）の「相棒（あいぼう）」という言葉（ことば）から来（き）ています。
The name "AIBO" comes from the Japanese word "aibou."
相棒（あいぼう）は、いつも一緒（いっしょ）にいる大切（たいせつ）なパートナーという意味（いみ）です。
"Aibou" means a special partner who is always with you.
AIBOは、本当（ほんとう）の犬（いぬ）のように歩（ある）いたり、遊（あそ）んだりすることができました。
AIBO could walk and play just like a real dog.
たくさんの人（ひと）と一緒（いっしょ）に生活（せいかつ）するうちに、AIBOはただの機械（きかい）ではなく、家族（かぞく）の一員（いちいん）になりました。
As AIBO lived with many people, it became more than just a machine. It became a member of the family.
AIBOの「死（し）」と「復活（ふっかつ）」
The "Death" and "Rebirth" of AIBO
しかし、初代（しょだい）AIBOとの楽（たの）しい時間（じかん）に、終（お）わりが来（き）ます。
However, the fun times with the first-generation AIBO had to come to an end.
ソニーは2006年（ねん）に、この古（ふる）いAIBOの生産（せいさん）をやめてしまいました。
Sony stopped making this old type of AIBO in 2006.
そして、2014年（ねん）には、壊（こわ）れた古（ふる）いAIBOを直（なお）すための公式（こうしき）の修理（しゅうり）サービスも終（お）わってしまったのです。
Then, in 2014, the official repair service for these old AIBOs also ended.
これは、古（ふる）いAIBOの「飼（か）い主（ぬし）」たちにとって、とても悲（かな）しいニュースでした。
This was very sad news for the owners of the old AIBOs.
しかし、うれしいニュースもあります。AIBOはとても人気（にんき）があったので、ソニーは2018年（ねん）に、まったく新（あたら）しいAIBOを発売（はつばい）しました。
But there is also happy news. Because AIBO was so popular, Sony released a brand new AIBO in 2018.
今（いま）でも、新（あたら）しいAIBOを買（か）うことができます。
You can still buy a new AIBO today.
では、修理（しゅうり）できなくなった、古（ふる）いAIBOたちはどうなったのでしょうか？
So, what happened to the old AIBOs that could no longer be repaired?
実（じつ）は、多（おお）くの人（ひと）が古（ふる）いAIBOのために、特別（とくべつ）なことをしています。それが「お葬式（おそうしき）」です。
Actually, many people do something special for their old AIBOs. They hold a funeral for them.
なぜ、人々（ひとびと）は動（うご）かなくなったロボットのためにお葬式（おそうしき）をするのでしょうか？
