和暦（われき）(Japanese Calendars)

日本（にほん）には、2つの暦（こよみ）があります。

Japan uses two kinds of calendars.

和暦（われき）と西暦（せいれき）です。

One is the Japanese calendar, called wareki.

The other is the Western calendar, called seireki.

和暦は、天皇（てんのう）がかわると、こよみもかわります。。

The Japanese calendar changes when a new emperor takes the throne.

たとえば、昭和（しょうわ）から平成（へいせい）にかわったとき、

1989年（せんきゅうひゃくはちじゅうくねん）の1月（いちがつ）に天皇がかわったので、その日（ひ）から「平成（へいせい）」がはじまりました。

The Japanese calendar changes when a new emperor takes the throne.

For example, in 1989, the Showa era ended.

A new emperor began his reign in January 1989.

So the Heisei era started on that day.

天皇がかわると、その年（とし）のとちゅうでこよみもかわります。

When an emperor changes, the calendar also changes in the middle of that year.

1989年の1月7日（なのか）までは「昭和（しょうわ）64年（ろくじゅうよねん）」、1月8日（ようか）からは「平成元年（がんねん）」でした。

Until January 7, 1989, it was Showa 64.

From January 8, it became Heisei Gannen.

和暦では、はじめの年（とし）を「元年（がんねん）」といいます。

Gannen means the first year of a new era.

西暦（せいれき）は、世界（せかい）でつかわれているこよみで、1年（いちねん）のあいだずっと同（おな）じです。

The Western calendar is used all over the world.

It does not change during the year.

たとえば、1989年は1月から12月（じゅうにがつ）までずっと「1989年」です。

For example, the year 1989 was called “1989” from January to December.

西暦2025年は令和（れいわ）７年（しちねん/ななねん）です。

The year 2025 in the Western calendar is Reiwa 7 in the Japanese calendar.
