An Anime Song Reached Global Churches
Lilium, a Latin hymn from a Japanese anime, is being sung by choirs in churches around the world.

"Elfen Lied" is a Japanese anime that was first broadcast in 2004. It is based on a manga and tells a story about sadness, love, and forgiveness. In the United States and Germany, dubbed versions (where the characters speak in the local language) were also created. Many fans still enjoy the series today.
The opening song of this anime is called “Lilium.” It is sung in Latin, with a quiet and beautiful melody. “Lilium” is the Latin word for “lily,” a flower. In Christianity, lilies are a symbol of purity and a pure heart.

In Ukraine, a boys’ choir called Dzvinochok performed it at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Kyiv.
A Japanese choir performed “Lilium” at a benefit concert held at Union Church in California.

Although the lyrics are in Latin and not widely understood, the melody has resonated with many people around the world for its beauty and solemn atmosphere.
In Japan, anime songs are rarely performed in public.

アニメの歌『Lilium（リリウム）』が世界の教会で歌われています
『エルフェンリート』は、2004年に放送された日本のアニメです。原作はマンガで、人のかなしい思いや、愛とゆるしについて描かれています。アメリカやドイツでは、ふきかえ版（その国の言葉で話すバージョン）も作られていて、今でも多くのファンがいます。
このアニメのオープニングの曲は、『Lilium（リリウム）』といいます。ラテン語で歌われていて、とてもきれいでしずかなメロディーです。「リリウム」はラテン語で「百合（ゆり）」という花の名前です。百合は、キリスト教で「清らかな心」のシンボルとされています。
この曲の歌詞には、神を信じる気持ち、こわがらずに生きたい思い、まちがいをみとめてやり直したいという気持ち、清らかな心で生きたいこと、愛につつまれて生きたいというねがいがこめられています。どの宗教の人でも歌うことができ、特定の教えにかたよっていません。

「Lilium」は、ただのアニメの主題歌ではありません。
この歌の歌詞はラテン語で書かれていて、意味がわからない人も多いです。
それでも、この歌のメロディーの美しさや、しずかな雰囲気は、世界の多くの人の心に残っています。
日本では、アニメの主題歌が公共の場で歌われることはめったにありません。しかし「Lilium」は、もともとはアニメのために作られた曲でありながら、いまでは世界中の教会やコンサートで、美しく荘厳な楽曲として歌われています。
