ニホンオオカミは、日本（にほん）だけにいたオオカミです。
The Japanese wolf lived only in Japan.
日本（にほん）の山（やま）にすんでいましたが、1905年（せんきゅうひゃくごねん）にさいごに見（み）つかってから、ぜんぜん見（み）つかっていません。
It used to live in the mountains.
It was last seen in 1905 and has not been seen since.
環境省（かんきょうしょう）のレッドリストでは、50年以上（ごじゅうねんいじょう）生（い）きていることが確認（かくにん）できないと、その動物（どうぶつ）は「絶滅（ぜつめつ）した」となります。
In Japan, the Ministry of the Environment has a Red List.
If an animal has not been seen for more than 50 years, it is called extinct.
だから、ニホンオオカミは、絶滅種（ぜつめつしゅ）とされています。
So the Japanese wolf is now listed as an extinct species.
ニホンオオカミは、食肉目（しょくにくもく）・犬科（いぬか）・犬属（いぬぞく）に入（はい）ります。
The Japanese wolf belongs to the order Carnivora, the dog family, and the dog group.
これは、ジャッカルやコヨーテと同（おな）じ仲間（なかま）です。
It is related to jackals and coyotes.
さいきんでも、ニホンオオカミを見（み）たという人（ひと）がいたり、ニホンオオカミかもしれない動物（どうぶつ）の動画（どうが）がインターネットにアップされたりしています。
Even today, some people say they have seen a Japanese wolf.
There are also videos on the internet showing animals that might be Japanese wolves.
でも、それが本当（ほんとう）にニホンオオカミかどうかは、はっきりしていません。
But no one knows for sure if they really are.
もしかしたら、ニホンオオカミは、どこかで生（い）き残（のこ）っているかもしれません。
Maybe the Japanese wolf is still alive somewhere.
