A Real Female Samurai: Nakano Takeko

中野竹子（なかの たけこ）は、幕末（ばくまつ）の 日本（にほん）で 戦（たたか）った、じっさいに いた 女武者（おんなむしゃ）です。
Nakano Takeko was a real female warrior who fought in Japan during the last days of the samurai era.
生（う）まれたのは、1847年（ねん）ごろから1850年（ねん）ごろと いわれていて、彼女（かのじょ）が 亡（な）くなったのは、1868年（ねん）の 戊辰戦争（ぼしん せんそう）の ときでした。
She was born around 1847 to 1850 and died in 1868, during the Boshin War.
たけこは、会津藩（あいづはん）の 出身（しゅっしん）で、小（ちい）さい ころから 百人一首（ひゃくにんいっしゅ）や 書道（しょどう）に すぐれ、おとなに なると 薙刀（なぎなた）も とても じょうずに なりました。
Takeko was born in Aizu. She was good at poetry and calligraphy when she was young,
and when she grew up, she became very skilled with the naginata, a long-bladed weapon.
1868年（ねん）、新政府（しんせいふ）と 旧幕府（きゅうばくふ）の 戦争（せんそう）が はじまると、たけこは 「娘子隊（じょしたい）」という、女（おんな）だけの 部隊（ぶたい）を つくり、自分（じぶん）たちの 町（まち）を まもるために 戦（たたか）いました。
In 1868, when war broke out between the new government and the old shogunate,
Takeko formed a group of only women called the "Joshitai" and fought to protect her hometown.
彼女（かのじょ）は 出陣（しゅつじん）するとき、
「武士（もののふ）の 猛（たけ）き 心（こころ）に くらぶれば、
数（かず）にも 入（い）らぬ わが身（み）ながらも」
という 辞世（じせい）の 歌（うた）を 紙（かみ）に 書（か）いて、
その紙（かみ）を 自分（じぶん）の 薙刀（なぎなた）に むすびつけて 戦（たたか）いました。
Before going to battle, she tied a poem to her naginata.
The poem said, “Though I am not counted among true warriors, I have the brave heart of one.” It was her farewell poem.
たけこは 柳橋（やなぎばし）という 場所（ばしょ）で、戦（たたか）いの 最中（さいちゅう）に 銃（じゅう）で うたれて、わかくして 亡（な）くなりました。年（とし）は 20歳（さい）くらいだったと いわれています。
Takeko was shot and killed in battle at a place called Yanagibashi. She was still very young—around 20 years old—when she died.
彼女（かのじょ）の お墓（はか）は いまも 福島県（ふくしまけん）の 会津坂下町（あいづ ばんげまち）に あります。そのちかくには、辞世（じせい）の 歌（うた）が きざまれた 石（いし）も 建（た）っています。
Her grave is still in Aizu-Bange Town in Fukushima. Near it stands a stone monument with her final poem carved into it.
