What instrument do you think of when you hear the word "taiko"?
世界（せかい）にはたくさんの太鼓がありますが、今回（こんかい）は日本（にほん）の伝統的（でんとうてき）な太鼓、「和太鼓（わだいこ）」について紹介（しょうかい）します。
There are many types of drums around the world. Today, I'll tell you about Wadaiko, a traditional Japanese drum.
和太鼓の音（おと）は、力強（ちからづよ）くて、聞（き）く人（ひと）の心（こころ）に響（ひび）きます。
Wadaiko drums make powerful sounds. These sounds can really touch your heart.

What is Wadaiko?
「和太鼓」は、日本（にほん）で昔（むかし）から使（つか）われてきた太鼓のことです。
Wadaiko are drums that have been used in Japan for a very long time.
お祭（まつ）りや神様（かみさま）へのお願（ねが）い、そして今（いま）では音楽（おんがく）の演奏（えんそう）やパフォーマンスなど、いろいろな場面（ばめん）で活躍（かつやく）しています。
People use them at festivals, to pray to gods, and now for music shows and performances. Wadaiko is used in many different ways.
和太鼓の音（おと）は、ただ大（おお）きいだけでなく、叩（たた）き方（かた）によってさまざまな表情（ひょうじょう）を見（み）せます。
Wadaiko sounds are not just loud. They can show many different feelings depending on how they're played.
大地（だいち）を揺（ゆ）るがすような力強（ちからづよ）い音から、雨（あめ）の音（おと）のように優（やさ）しい音まで、和太鼓は多（おお）くの音を表現（ひょうげん）できる魅力（みりょく）を持（も）っています。
They can make powerful sounds that shake the ground. They can also make soft sounds like falling rain. Wadaiko drums are amazing because they can make so many different sounds.

Wadaiko Performers Around the World
日本には、和太鼓の音とパフォーマンスで、世界中（せかいじゅう）の人々（ひとびと）を魅了（みりょう）しているプロのグループがたくさんあります。
In Japan, there are many professional groups. They use Wadaiko sounds and performances to amaze people all over the world.
特（とく）に有名（ゆうめい）な３つのグループを紹介（しょうかい）しましょう。
Let's look at three very famous groups.
鼓童（こどう）
Kodo
世界（せかい）で最も（もっとも）有名（ゆうめい）な和太鼓グループの一つ（ひとつ）。太鼓の演奏（えんそう）だけでなく、歌（うた）や踊（おど）り、そして日本（にほん）の伝統的（でんとうてき）な美意識（びいしき）を取（と）り入（い）れた総合芸術（そうごうげいじゅつ）のパフォーマンス。世界中（せかいじゅう）で数々（かずかず）の公演（こうえん）を行（おこな）い、日本（にほん）の伝統文化（でんとうぶんか）を世界（せかい）に広（ひろ）めることに貢献（こうけん）。Kodo is one of the most famous Wadaiko groups in the world. They don't just play drums. They also sing, dance, and use traditional Japanese beauty in their shows. They perform all over the world. They help share Japanese culture with everyone.
舞太鼓（まいだいこ）あすか組（ぐみ）
Maidaiko Asuka Gumi
力強（ちからづよ）くエネルギッシュな演奏（えんそう）が特徴（とくちょう）。観客（かんきゃく）を圧倒（あっとう）する迫力（はくりょく）あるパフォーマンス。太鼓の音（おと）と、メンバーの躍動的（やくどうてき）な動（うご）きが一体（いったい）となり、見（み）る人（ひと）に大（おお）きな感動（かんどう）と元気（げんき）を与（あた）える。
They play with great power and energy. Their performances are very exciting and impress the audience. The drum sounds and the performers' lively movements become one. They give people great emotion and energy.
著者（ちょしゃ）は機会（きかい）があれば舞太鼓（まいだいこ）あすか組（ぐみ）のライブに行（い）ってみたいです。

DRUM TAO（ドラム・タオ）
和太鼓だけでなく、篠笛（しのぶえ）や箏（こと）などの日本（にほん）の伝統楽器（でんとうがっき）を組（く）み合（あ）わせる。斬新（ざんしん）な衣装（いしょう）や最新（さいしん）のステージ演出（えんしゅつ）を取（と）り入（い）れた、エンターテイメント性（せい）の高（たか）いショー。まるで一本（いっぽん）の物語（ものがたり）を見（み）ているようなステージが人気（にんき）。世界中（せかいじゅう）で高（たか）い評価（ひょうか）を得（え）ている。
They use Wadaiko drums, and also traditional Japanese instruments like the shinobue (flute) and koto (harp). They use new costumes and modern stage designs. Their shows are very entertaining. Their performances are popular because they feel like watching a story. They are highly praised all over the world.
これらのグループは、それぞれ違（ちが）った魅力（みりょく）を持（も）っていますが、どれも和太鼓の素晴（すば）らしさを伝（つた）えてくれます。
Each of these groups has its own special charm. But they all show how wonderful Wadaiko is.
